Why do they call it Booty?

Pirates referred to anything they, well, pirated at sea as ‘booty.’ This term was Old English ‘bute’ (pronounced ‘booty’) which meant to exchange something of value for something of equal value. It could have been a land swap or the purchase of furniture for money or any similar kind of exchange.
